Swansea Community Farm

Now more than ever, we're all looking for places to go that get us outdoors and don't cost the earth. Swansea Community Farm is great bit of outdoors fun for all the family!

What's there?

Plenty of learning opportunities

A small working farm, home to to rare breed farm animals including goats, ducks, bees, sheep, pigs, and geese, can be found at the centre. The rare breeds are important to the farm, as they're making an effort to preserve both animal diversity and Welsh cultural heritage.

They also run demonstrations on organic growing from fruits and vegetables to flowers. You can learn how to grow plants and vegetables, how to prepare the ground, when to sow the seeds, and all the other tips and tricks while gaining hands-on experience.

Learn about wildlife gardening, important for keeping the landscape blossoming for the bees and bugs that helps the ecosystems naturally pollinate everything that grows. You'll also get to learn how to compost properly - and why that's super important!

Orchard and apiary

They also have an established orchard and an apiary onside, and you can learn more about bees and the important jobs they do.

Refreshments

There is an onsite café, serving locally grown organic produce, and the seasonal menu really makes use of the seasonal food!

Volunteering programme

The farm has an established volunteering programme helping people to get experience before getting a job. Helping young people and adults alike, it's a place where anyone interested in being outdoors can join in and become part of the community.

Benefits of the community farm

Now more than ever, becoming connected with the outdoors is something we all want a little more of. The farm is doing just that, helping people get their hands dirty and feel less isolated, building both friendships and community.

Every day's a school day there, with so much to learn about the animals, the produce, and a whole host of wildlife - and it's just a really, lovely, place to visit. Back in March, the Community Farm hit the headlines for securing the 35-year lease to their grounds. This has given them so much, as big funding bodies wouldn't invest unless a long term lease was acquired. The farm has free entry, so they rely heavily on donations and community support, which has been a bit of a struggle during COVID times/ Every little helps, and all donations are received incredibly gratefully to keep the farm going, and bringing happiness to as many as possible!
